The ship in the story can be taken both literally and figuratively to represent any dream that an individual has. The Ballad of Billy McFee: Meet the other challenges The clams, Tony and Liz, are naysayers that make Billy's challenge even greater. They sit on the sidelines and make negative comments that they think are hilarious. Although Billy choses to ignore the clams, their negative outlooks have to bother him, at least subconsciously. The clams may also provide a bit of naughty challenge to the reader, drawing them away from the main lyrics. No one can totally ignore the naysayer clams in their life, you just have to deal with them! And just as in real life, are the naysayer clams really bad inside? The Ballad of Billy McFee: Meet the crew Billy McFee, Captain of the crew Billy McFee is a visionary who sees potential in the sunken ship when everyone else swims by. Billy maintains determination despite overwhelming odds. He also welcomes diverse individuals (Molly, George, and Emma) to join his crew and to share his dream of sailing that ship. But first, they must find a way to get it unstuck from the muck! Molly Carcharodon, first mate Molly is the great white shark with the toothy smile who assures everyone she meets that she doesn't bite! She is Billy's first official crew member and provides momentum to his vision. And, her appearance shushes the naysayer crabs (for the most part)! George Physeter, second mate George is the huge, lovable whale that supplies strength, support, and humor to the crew. Emma Carcinus, engineer Emma is a brainy crab on a journey of growth and improvement. She reads self-help and science books to prepare herself to become the ship's engineer/navigator/science officer on Billy's crew. Although she is the smallest member of the crew, Emma has brains, talent and determination!
