Payne "I used to believe in “biblical manhood and womanhood”—that God ordained male headship in the home and in the church, that wives must submit to their husbands, but that husbands do not have to submit to their wives. While I still believe that the Bible is inerrant, I no longer believe in “biblical manhood and womanhood.” My view did not change because I rejected the authority of Scripture, but because I examined the very Bible passages that I thought established gender hierarchy. It is precisely those passages, including 1 Cor. 11:2–16, 1 Cor. 14:34–35, Ephesians 5, 1 Timothy 2–3, Titus 1–2, and 1 Peter 3 that caused me to reject the exclusion of women from leadership in the church and the home."
