Finding Grace in the Twelve Steps When it comes to recovering from addiction, there are three things to remember: Addiction can, and does, happen to anyone.Addiction is not a moral referendum on one's life.No human power can relieve us of addiction. Addiction is a symptom of our fallen world—the same fallen world that Jesus came to save. This means that anyone who is suffering from the effects of addictions or unhealthy attachments can turn to him and find the healing, peace, and freedom for which they long. The Catholic in Recovery Workbook is the first step-by-step guide for working through the Twelve Steps of recovery from a Catholic perspective. If you or someone you love struggles with addiction, dependency, or unhealthy attachments to alcohol, sex, food, or other substances or behaviors, this book will help you discover the life-changing mercy of Jesus Christ through Church tradition and the grace of the sacraments. This Workbook Is Divided into Four Parts: Baptism When we are baptized in Christ, we are plunged into the living waters of renewal and healing. Similarly, we are invited to “plunge” into the first few steps of recovery by turning away from our addictive habits and unhealthy thinking patterns, as well as our denial, shame, and fear. We take this plunge when we’re ready to admit our powerlessness and our need for God. Reconciliation In order to experience true Reconciliation—with God, with those we have hurt, with those who have caused us resentment, and with ourselves—we must first take inventory of our own resentments, fears, and sins. We are then invited into the Sacrament of Reconciliation, in which we, with willingness and humility, are freed from sin and able to experience Christ's transformative love. Eucharist We are called to examine our conscience daily, which makes us aware of our continuous need for grace, as well as opens up our hearts to receive the daily bread of God’s mercy and love. As Catholics, one way of receiving this daily bread is through the Eucharist. When we receive the Eucharist with gratitude and trust in the Lord’s mercy, we allow Jesus to transform our hearts. Confirmation The graces offered to us in Confirmation are extraordinary, as it allows us to be brought into greater communion with Christ. Together with regular Confession and Communion, the gifts of the Holy Spirit that grow in us through our Confirmation give us a special strength to go out and be witnesses of Christ to those in our families and communities. Praise for Catholic in Recovery “The Catholic in Recovery Workbook has been an amazing source of strength. As a result of God’s grace and working the Steps with a small group, my family relationships are healing and I’ve remained sober from alcohol, drugs, and sexual desire for longer than I can ever remember.” “Scott Weeman has beautifully fused the effectiveness of the Twelve Step recovery model and the wisdom of the Church into a compassionate, interactive guide. This workbook will make a difference in the lives of many faithful Catholics in recovery.” “After several decades of recovery from compulsive overeating, it’s refreshing to find a fellowship and a workbook that blends the sacraments with the Twelve Steps. What a gift to the Church!” Further Readings for Catholics in Recovery In the first book to directly integrate the Twelve Steps with the practice of Catholicism, Scott Weeman, founder and director of Catholic in Recovery, pairs his personal story with compassionate straight talk to show Catholics how to bridge the commonly felt gap between the Higher Power of twelve-step programs and the merciful God that he rediscovered in the heart of the sacraments.
