Introduction Urban sketching is by definition spontaneous and immediate. In my case, I’ll often pause to sketch on my way to work or other outings. Having the right tools at hand makes it easier, and also means I’m likely to sketch more often. If my sketching bag is packed and by the door, I’m ready for whatever the day brings even if it means sketching in my car on a cold day. After years of trying out different tools, I’ve reduced my kit to the essentials Architecture and Cityscapes Not every city has an art deco skyscraper or centuries-old cathedrals, but buildings—big and small, old and new, lavish and utilitarian—are everywhere, offering the urban sketcher a wide array of drawing opportunities. Buildings reflect the history, geography, climate, and lifestyle of the communities in which they were erected. In southwestern Spain, where my family hails from, whitewashed homes cover the landscape of sundrenched towns. In Seattle, where I live now, houseboats are a product of the region’s maritime history. In New York, soaring skyscrapers symbolize American ambition. Understanding Perspective Imagine you are standing in an amazing space, say the Pantheon in Rome. Snapping a quick photo like everyone else isn’t enough—you want to somehow capture this experience, but your group is leaving in only half an hour. What do you do? SKETCH! Sketching on location is powerful. You have to look at something really carefully to draw it. The process of drawing imprints what you see into your brain in such a way that years from now, the sounds of the people walking by, the scent of the rain, the feel of the warm air, and much more will all flood back when you look at your sketch. Urban Sketching is about capturing your experiences on paper, and more important, in your mind and heart. It’s a great way to learn and remember. People and Motion Human activity defines a city just as much or more than the buildings that appear in the postcards. Can you imagine a sketch of New York’s Times Square without the bustling crowds; Venice with no gondoliers; or Seattle’s Pike Place Market without the guys tossing fish? As an urban sketcher, you may choose to ignore all the human noise. A city skyline or a lonesome historic building will still make for great, timeless sketches. But the rewards of sketching people are too great to always leave them out of the picture. Working With Color There’s nothing more exciting than a sketching palette filled with fresh paint. For me, it’s a box of candy. Acid yellows, shiny reds, deep blues. My brush hovers eagerly over the paints as I decide where to dip first. And when I finally do make the plunge, there’s nothing more beautiful than that first stroke of color on a sheet of bright white paper. Can you tell that I love color? I’ve even caught myself driving and mixing the colors of a passing scene in my head which seems a bit crazy as I think about it, but it’s true.
