Empaths feel the pain of others—quite literally Being an empath is like having six senses rather than five. Other people are not aware that empaths can sense others’ emotions even without seeing overt expressions of them. They can notice another’s anger, grief, or joy when that person does not verbalize it. From an early age, I wanted to learn about the human mind By thirteen, I was adamant about a career in psychology. What guided me to this decision was not an interest in the human brain or a longing to heal others. What fed this decision was a desire to understand me and grasp why people caused such pain. I thought if I received the degrees, I could explain why life felt as it did. If I examined all there was about the human psyche, there was a chance my experience would change. When you hear descriptive details about someone like they are highly empathic When you hear descriptive details about someone like they are highly empathic, have keen senses, notice subtleties, and tune into others’ mood shifts, do you think, “They’re an empath?” They may be an empath, but did you know these descriptive details also describe a trauma survivor? Hypervigilance is a state of heightened alertness. In a state of hypervigilance, you are extremely sensitive to subtleties in your surroundings. Hypervigilance can be the brain’s way of adapting to trauma. To minimize the reoccurrence of the trauma, the subconscious mind continually scans the environment to anticipate danger. As a result, our senses are on high alert, ready to spot and respond to any risk. Intuition is that sensation in your gut when you know something is not right Or is that moment when you realized a person is trustworthy without really knowing them. You do not understand why or have evidence for feeling that way—you just know. Intuition is not rational. It does not come after thoughtful consideration or weighing the choices with friends. Intuition is a deep-seated knowing that appears out of nowhere. The process feels unforced and innate. Although intuition is natural to us all, its accuracy can be affected by our experiences and how our subconscious brain processes the situation related to our experiences. In short, sometimes our intuition is spot-on; and sometimes it is not.
