How The Old Farmer’s Almanac Predicts the Weather Deciphering Sunspots The Old Farmer’s Almanac has been issuing weather forecasts since it first began publishing in 1792, back when George Washington was president of the United States! The original methodology came from a formula devised by the Almanac’s founder, Robert B. Thomas, and is based on the idea that weather on Earth is influenced by magnetic storms on the surface of the Sun. Thomas’s original notes about this formula are kept in a locked black box in the Almanac’s office in Dublin, New Hampshire. Three Scientific Disciplines Today, while The Old Farmer’s Almanac still uses elements of Thomas’s original formula, its forecasting methodology has been refined and enhanced with state-of-the-art technology and modern scientific calculations. In fact, it employs three scientific disciplines to make its long-range predictions, including solar science (the study of sunspots and other solar activity), climatology (the study of prevailing weather patterns), and meteorology (the study of the atmosphere). The Almanac reviews its previous year’s forecasts for accuracy every year and prints those results in each new edition. Often, these results are very close to their traditional claim of 80 percent accuracy.
