The inspiration behind the setting for The Orchard: As a child growing up in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, I eagerly awaited the appearance of thousands of apple and peach blossoms each springtime. In the fall, I could hardly wait for the scent and taste of freshly picked apples, which I would help my mother core and peel to make apple crisp, pies, and baked apples. Naturally, with my lifelong love of orchards, I decided to feature one in this book. The fictitious Hostetler orchard in this novel was inspired by the well-known Kauffman Fruit Farm, owned and operated in Bird-in-Hand for six generations by the Kauffman family. Ellie Hostetler, the young Amish protagonist in The Orchard, not only loves everything related to working in the orchard with her father and brothers, but she also jugs cider and bakes apple fritters and Dutch apple pies with her mother to sell at market. She and her twin brother, Evan, often stroll through the orchard with their beloved Dawdi Hezekiah, the original owner. The family expects Evan to take over the role of manager once he’s older, but when he is called up in the draft lottery during the Vietnam War, he doesn’t request conscientious objector status. Will he be sent overseas to fight as an Amish teenager?
