It is the same subtext as if they were climbing a rock wall together: Pull the slack out of the rope and hold on—this could go wrong fast. Should Gillet choose to cut the wire, then a simple pull of the pin on his EPIRB device would be all that was necessary to send the secondary message of final resort: 'Emergency, send rescue.' Gillet takes a deep breath and feels the full weight of his decision to alter his single lifeline. He snips the jumper wire.
