"The Yellow Wallpaper" is a short narrative by American author Charlotte Perkins Gilman that was originally released in The New England Magazine in January 1892. It is viewed as a significant early work of American feminist writing because of its depiction of nineteenth-century attitudes about women's mental and physical health. The narrative is told in the first person through diary entries written by a woman whose physician husband (John) has leased an ancient estate for the summer. The pair walks into the upstairs nursery, passing other rooms in the house. The husband bans the unidentified lady from working or writing as a kind of therapy, instead urging her to eat properly and get lots of fresh air to recover from what he refers to as "temporary nervous depression - a minor hysterical tendency," a diagnosis widespread among women at the time.
