Why write this book? My first explorations into Tolkien beyond simple entertainment started when I realized how robust his doctrine of evil was, and the way he was able to embody significant theological ideas into memorable and realistic images. I soon realized that Tolkien had a lot to say about creation and angels and all sorts of things, and I wondered whether I might be able to "reconstruct" an entire theology from his writings. There are loads of books on spiritual themes in The Lord of the Rings, but this book focuses on Tolkien himself, as a thinker and a lay theologian. That means considering a much wider scope than just his fiction, but it also means showing just how aligned his fiction is with his theology.
