Excerpt from Vantage Point, 'The Dragon Route,' by Karl Karlstrom The Painted Wall is the highest wall in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Colorado. It is about 2,700 feet high and is composed of dark metamorphic rocks cut by bands of pegmatite. The first time I saw the Painted Wall was in July 1971. I sat for a whole day on the south rim, peering at the wall with binoculars, trying to piece together a route. It’s a strange wall: shadowy black rock streaked and spattered by whitish veins. Its appearance is sinister, nearly demonic, and its features are elusive. During that first day a myriad of ghost-like crack systems and a thousand phantom ledges appeared and then vanished before my eyes. The wall was in a state of flux, constantly changing its appearance with changing light conditions and never revealing its true aspect.
