The Vital Question by Nick Lane is a fascinating book that aims to answer one of the most fundamental questions in biology: What is the origin of life? The book explores the role that energy plays in the emergence of life and the evolution of complex organisms.
Lane is a well-respected scientist in the field of biochemistry and has published numerous articles on the subject of energy and evolution. In the book, he draws upon his extensive research and provides a comprehensive analysis of the current state of knowledge in the field.
The book is divided into three sections. The first section explores the origin of life and how it emerged from the primordial soup. Lane argues that the origin of life was a result of a series of chemical reactions that were driven by energy. He suggests that the energy was derived from simple molecules, such as hydrogen, which were abundant in the early Earth.
The second section of the book looks at the evolution of complex organisms, such as animals and plants. Lane argues that the emergence of complex organisms was made possible by the evolution of mitochondria. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of the cell and are responsible for generating energy in the form of ATP. According to Lane, mitochondria were originally free-living bacteria that were engulfed by another cell. Over time, the two cells formed a symbiotic relationship, and the bacteria evolved into mitochondria.
The third section of the book explores the future of life on Earth. Lane argues that the evolution of life is intimately tied to the availability of energy. As energy sources become depleted, life will be forced to adapt or face extinction. Lane suggests that in order to ensure the survival of life, we need to find new sources of energy and develop sustainable energy systems.
One of the most compelling arguments in the book is the idea that life is fundamentally an energy problem. Lane argues that life is essentially a system that captures energy and uses it to maintain its organization and complexity. He suggests that understanding the principles of energy flow is critical to understanding the origin and evolution of life.
The book is written in a clear and engaging style, and Lane does an excellent job of explaining complex scientific concepts in a way that is accessible to a general audience. The book is also well-researched, and Lane provides extensive references and citations to support his arguments.
Overall, The Vital Question is an excellent book that provides a fresh and innovative perspective on the origin and evolution of life. Lane's arguments are well-supported and thought-provoking, and the book is a must-read for anyone interested in the fundamental principles of biology and the nature of life.
The book is particularly relevant in the context of the current global climate crisis, where energy and sustainability are critical issues. Lane's call for the development of sustainable energy systems is an urgent and timely reminder of the importance of these issues.
In conclusion, The Vital Question is a fascinating and thought-provoking book that offers new insights into the origin and evolution of life. Lane's arguments are well-supported, and the book is well-written and accessible to a general audience. The book is a must-read for anyone interested in biology, evolution, and the nature of life, and it is particularly relevant in the context of the current global climate crisis.

This book has given me many great ideas and even more practical advice. I see some reviewers saying this was mostly a general sales philosophy and outdated advice. If you're already on sale, this might be a re-hash for you. There are criticisms of the book that it doesn't talk about tools, metrics, and so on, and I agree that it's important.
Very well written, and thought out. I really enjoyed this book and this was well worth the read.
This book is what I have been looking for for the past 2 years! Seriously, I just stumbled across this book and when I started reading it…my enthusiasm skyrocketed!
