Wilco’s current line-up, together since 2004, is the most solid, most stable, and longest-running version of the band, and they don’t appear to have any plans of stopping anytime soon. While there will surely be new Wilco music—possibly by the time this book is published—when it comes to appraising the first twenty-five years of their storied career, Wilcopedia will love you, baby. Star Wars (2015) Although it had been four years since The Whole Love, the release of Star Wars came as a complete surprise in the summer of 2015. This is because it was announced and released on the same day, July 16, via a message from the band’s official Twitter handle, @wilco, saying, ‘Star Wars: a new Wilco album featuring 11 original songs is available now. Free to download at wilcoworld.net.’ ‘Why release an album this way and why make it free?’ Tweedy posted on Wilco’s Instagram that same day. ‘Well, the biggest reason, and I’m not sure we even need any others, is that it felt like it would be fun. What’s more fun than a surprise?’ Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (2002) The making of Wilco's breakthrough album is well documented in books on the band, countless magazine articles and blog posts, and in Sam Jones's 2002 documentary I Am Trying Break Your Heart: A Film About Wilco, but the basics are as follows. Amid major line-up changes, Tweedy & company make their most accomplished album to date, but it's rejected by their label, Reprise, and they are dropped after refusing to make changes to it. After some negotiation, Wilco are able to keep the rights to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot for free, and start streaming it on their website, where it gains many accolades from critics and fans, and leads to the band being courted by over thirty labels. In November 2001, they sign with Nonesuch Records, which ironically happens to be an AOL_Time Warner subsidiary, like Reprise. "There's no way around the fact that they did in effect pay for the record twice," Tweedy told Jon Pareles of the New York Times around the time of the album's release.
