Part activist, part academic, part rant, part poetry, part magic and all illustrated by Sabrina Scott From author, Sabrina Scott. Magic is my lifeblood, it is my lens, it is how I feel and interact with others. It is all of those things, and more. This book is an illustrated essay about how techniques of magic can re-orient the practitioner to see non-human bodies and relationships in different ways. My practices as an illustrator, writer, and witch are all intermingling, entangled. These creative processes are my way of working out similar things using different methods and media, but the creative fire that emerges comes from the same inspiration and intuition. I want to help push forward conversations about magic, life, death, change, transformation, environment, learning, growing. This book is about objects. It is about how the world pushes back on us, how it shapes our bodies, creates our forms, curates our creations. (Sabrina Scott photo by Michelle Rowe) Excerpt from the foreword by Timothy Morton 'We keep looking in the wrong place for happiness and fulfillment. We think it must be next week. Tomorrow. Maybe 5 minutes from now I'll be truly happy. Or maybe we have regret. Happiness was then, last month, when we were small. Can't have it now. Happiness couldn't be now, could it, because that would mean its somewhere inside. What do you call someone who shows you that you don't have to look elsewhere for magic? You call them a witch. And you can be that. You can be a Witchbody. Which is also a which body? Things are full of gaps and breaks, they are full of illusion, suffused with moonlight. Things are kinked and queer, everything. You can't ever tell exactly which witch body you are. What a relief! You get to explore the strangeness of that beautiful unique twist that is just exactly you, without an official you copyright stamp in sight. You will want this book by your side, like a window on the moon. You've invited the witch to heal you. The truth is they never really left. Embrace your entanglement, and wonder, we are a microcosm of how different bodies walking different paths can collide together in assemblage, if only for a moment Magic can break apart 'nature' by collapsing the term to include the interconnectedness of all bodies, rather than simply those whom humans consider a backdrop for their activities, lives, and deaths. When We need to escape our surroundings, when it becomes normalized to seek solace and beauty everywhere but where we live, we forget the beauty of being, rooted as it is in the flux of process, of transformation. I implore us not to give into the mirage of elsewhere, the mystique of over there. I Implore us not to shut our eyes to our own material circumstances. In magic we refuse to ignore the relationships we always already have with material bodies. Magic is an act of aft, philosophy and ontological production; it is an act and labor of love. Wonder emerges simply from doing and interacting with bodies in magic. Magic is an orienting corpus. It gives direction. It is a body, too. It shapes the humans who touch it. Each moment in magic is dialogic, pedagogic.
