Preparing To Hook One of the great things about hooking is that it is easy to pick up and put down. Once you have pinned the hessian to the frame and are ready to start hooking, you can hook however much you like. Then, if you get called away, simply put it down – and when you get a chance to hook some more, just pick it up and off you go again! Another great thing about hooking is that work ‘grows’ quite quickly. Once you get the hang of it, it’s compulsive! Learn all the key skills Design When you begin rug hooking, consider starting on a small project – possibly something that is no bigger than the hooking frame that you are using. Draw a rectangle or square on to your chosen piece of hessian, ensuring that the box lines are approximately 4cm (1½in) away from the edges of the frame, as you cannot hook too close to it. Then, within your newly drawn box,you can create a simple design and get started. Preparration Prior to transferring your design on to the hessian, prepare it by taping the edges. The Hooking Technique The hooking action may seem awkward at first, but with practice you will soon build up speed. Finishing Off On completion of the hooking, remove your work from the hooking frame and place it on a heat-proof surface. And put them together to create some delightful projects Badges These little hooked badges are quick and easy to make. They use small amounts of wool so they are great little makes for a bit of stash busting. They are lovely to give away as gifts to friends or to wear yourself with pride. I wear mine on a favourite old tweed jacket or a woolly jumper. Roses-in-a-basket Cushion Cover This design is using one of my favourite colours, the blue in the background behind the basket of roses. I love the way it works with the rich reds and pinks of the roses. I have made a border on this cushion, using some of the colours used in the main design. Small Robin Stocking These little stockings are a delight to make and hook up very quickly. They are great to give away as gifts for Christmas – everyone loves a robin! – and I have made lots of them over the years. Carpet Bag This bag was inspired by a very old ‘carpet-style’ bag I bought at an antique fair about thirty years ago. The bag was too shabby to use, but I just loved its shape and style. It is quite simple to make: it is hooked in one piece and then the front is folded over and stitched around the edge to make the bag.
