As women age, their bodies go through changes that can impact their health and well-being. From decreased bone density to hormonal changes, there are a variety of factors that can make staying healthy more challenging as women get older. That's where the book Younger Next Year for Women by Chris Crowley and Henry Lodge, MD comes in. This guide provides a roadmap for women to live like they're in their 50s and beyond, with tips and advice on everything from exercise to nutrition to mindset. In this article, we'll dive into the key takeaways from Younger Next Year for Women and explore how it can help women stay healthy and vibrant as they age.
One of the core principles of Younger Next Year for Women is that exercise is essential for healthy aging. According to the authors, exercise isn't just about burning calories and losing weight (although those are important benefits). Exercise also plays a critical role in keeping our bodies and minds healthy as we age. The book recommends that women exercise at least six days a week, with a mix of strength training and cardiovascular exercise.
In addition to exercise, nutrition is also key to healthy aging. The book emphasizes the importance of eating a diet that is rich in whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. It also advises against processed foods and sugary drinks, which can contribute to inflammation and other health issues.
But staying healthy isn't just about exercise and nutrition. Younger Next Year for Women also delves into the importance of mindset when it comes to healthy aging. The authors stress the importance of having a purpose and a sense of meaning in life, as well as staying socially engaged and cultivating positive relationships.
Another key theme of the book is the importance of sleep. According to the authors, getting enough quality sleep is essential for healthy aging. They recommend aiming for at least seven hours of sleep each night, and developing good sleep habits such as establishing a regular bedtime routine and avoiding electronics before bed.
One of the unique aspects of Younger Next Year for Women is its focus on the science behind healthy aging. The book draws on research from a variety of fields, including medicine, nutrition, and psychology, to provide a comprehensive understanding of what it takes to stay healthy as we age. This scientific approach is paired with practical advice and actionable tips that women can use to improve their health and well-being.

This book has given me many great ideas and even more practical advice. I see some reviewers saying this was mostly a general sales philosophy and outdated advice. If you're already on sale, this might be a re-hash for you. There are criticisms of the book that it doesn't talk about tools, metrics, and so on, and I agree that it's important.
It really gives another view of the world and, if you're not fooled, of marketing in general!
It's easy to read, really rewarding and best of all it provides plenty of examples to figure it out.
