About the Setting The novel is set on the coast of North Cornwall in the villages of Trebetherick and Rock, as well as the larger town of Padstow across the Camel Estuary. I have been to Cornwall a few times before, although not to this particular area. My husband and I planned to travel there in early 2020, but were unable to. Thankfully, a local guide (Elite Duchy Tours) was willing to review the manuscript and take photos for me. I enjoyed researching the history and traditions of this region, and hope readers will enjoy traveling there in the pages of A Castaway in Cornwall. Research Photos One of the reasons I chose to set the novel on the North Cornwall coast was because it is an area known for shipwrecks, some say second only to the Lizard Peninsula in the south of Cornwall. In fact, this stretch of coastline is sometimes referred to as “The Lizard of the North.” To this day, you can see the remains of shipwrecks along the shore. My husband took this photo when we visited the historic Charlestown Harbour (a Poldark filming location) on the south coast of Cornwall, as well as the nearby Shipwreck Treasure Museum. In the novel, the heroine, Laura Callaway, collects things washed ashore after shipwrecks and endeavors to return them to loved ones. Viewing the museum’s collection of artifacts helped inspire Laura’s collection of “treasures.” For centuries, the ancient church of St. Enodoc near Trebetherick, Cornwall, was half-buried by sand. The local vicar was still required to host services there once a year, so he would descend into the church through a hole in the roof. In the novel, Laura’s uncle is the parish vicar, and St. Enodoc is the setting of a pivotal scene.
