Sometimes called batts, this is wool that has been washed and carded, resulting in a fluffy mass comprising naturally curly fibres that have become entangled; it is very easy to felt and create shapes with this. Core wool can also come in slivers and tops... On a felting brush and with a sprung multi-needle tool, felt two ear shapes, roughly 5cm (1.96in) long and 4cm (1.57in) wide at the widest point. When the ears are complete, prepare and split 5cm (1.96in) lengths of wool as you did earlier, and begin attaching these around the bottom edge of the ear. Purpose-made carders are available to buy, or dog brushes of a similar shape make good alternatives. Needle felting is a relatively inexpensive craft, and there is a wide range of tools and wool to choose from, depending on what you want to create. To add some whisker detail to the muzzle, take a very fine wisp of grey tops and, with a fine needle, push into the muzzle in the opposite direction to that which the whiskers would grow. Continue to make three lines of these whisker markings, with four or five in a line. Trim the grey wool then apply a very light covering of white core to tone down the spots. You can either felt the pads directly onto the paws, or mark them out with a Spectrum Noir pen, until you are confident with felting the pads.
