Key Takeaways: Learn by doing, using a combination of theory and practical exercises Understand the flexibility and utility Kubernetes offers by creating, securing, and auditing development clusters Apply the knowledge and experience of the authors toward your own specific needs and organization requirements What’s new in this second edition? In the new service mesh chapters, we approach the subject from two perspectives: an app developer and an ops specialist. Replacing PodSecurityPolicies with GateKeeper was an addition too. We updated exercises and scripts to help readers deploy a complex cluster. This includes features like Istio and an OIDC Provider that uses a local container to emulate an AD server, all integrated with the Kiali Dashboard and secured using a reverse proxy that uses JWTs for authentication. What’s New: Updated for the new version of Kubernetes Topics on new technologies such as service mesh observability tools like Kiali, and global load balancing with K8GB Updated scripts for deploying complex clusters, with tools like Istio and OIDC Provider (all integrated in the Kiali Dashboard with a secure reverse proxy) An update of the Falco section that includes integration of the ECK stack, Kubeless for functions, and the new Falcosidekick-UI How does this book help readers master Kubernetes? Most technology professionals learn by doing, and this book gets you doing very quickly. We give you scripts that have a ready-to-go cluster for advanced chapters so you can focus on the exercises that reinforce the theory without having to spend time building out fresh clusters. Each chapter is presented in a sequence that gets increasingly complex, but previous chapters help to make the complex ones easier. All the scripts are thoroughly explained, and most of them have self-documentation to describe what each section is executing. While explaining topics, we avoid throwing technical terms without clarifying them and how they fit into the book. The book brings two different (and some overlapping) views on Kubernetes and these views complement one another. Between the two of us, we cover topics from not only our Kubernetes experience but also from our experience in roles that include development, high-security government work, professional training, and data center design/buildouts. How does your book differ from other books on Kubernetes? There are many books available that introduce Kubernetes and the basics of installing clusters, creating deployments, and using Kubernetes objects. Our plan was to create a book that would go beyond a basic cluster, and to keep the book at a reasonable length, we did not re-hash the basics of Kubernetes. We brought multiple perspectives to the book in a way we haven’t seen in other books, and this approach is bound to widen the readers’ perspectives. Many books focus on either cookbook style learning or complete theory. We decided to use a hybrid approach, which we feel is unique to our book. We felt that some theory, with exercises in between, would help to reinforce the material and at the same time, keep it interesting. For beginners, Kubernetes is exciting, not because it is shiny and new but because it is incredibly useful. Once you realize how fun learning and creating using the platform is, the massive amounts of knowledge you’ll need to run Kubernetes in production become less overwhelming.
